Opening of the ECO FESTIVAL 5th May (dollarpean Cultural Day)
Art Exhibition “Lyrical Worlds” by Gabriela von Habsburg  and Nikolaus Hipp
Cultural Centre of the Municipality of Athens  (50 Akadimias Street, Athens)

5-18 May
Opening Hours: :       9.00-13.00 & 17.00-21.00 except Mondays and Sunday afternoon

Gabriela von Habsburg was born in Luxemburg and was an apprentice of Robert Jacobsen. Her artistic trends coincided with her professor’s and are based in the frames of the geometrical artery. Steel is the material she uses and it is transformed from a cold metal to a living dialogue between nature and art. The freedom with which she uses and combines the different elements for her works of art is as equally important as her love and her relationship with nature.

Nikolaus Hipp was born in Munich and was a student of Heinrich Kropp. In 2000 he was awarded the art prize Franz Kafka in Prague. From the beginning of the 70’s and onwards he followed his own artistic vision regardless of the trends of the artistic world.

He expresses himself in abstract images and has been liberated from the obligation to replicate nature accurately. His works reveal a self sufficient and controlled sensibility, manipulating color and form with the assurance of a master craftsman.

Photo Exhibition «
Open-Air-Galerie» by Edith von Welser-Ude and Christian Ude
Goethe Institute  (14-16 Omirou Street, Athens)

6 – 30 May

Opening Hours: : Mon. – Thur.: 9.00 - 21.00,   Fri.:  9.00 – 19.00,    Sat.:  9.00 -  13.00

Since the 70’s we notice a number of writings and wall paintings in the big cities around the world. They narrate stories, expressing protest against misery, depicting a longing for nature and incorporating visions for a better environment. These wall paintings record the history of times, cover sites of works or just decorate using cheerful colours. Often these wall paintings copy the original art and take it out in the streets making it accessible to everyone.

Photographer Edith von Welser-Ude and her husband Christian Ude, mayor of the city of Munich since 1993, lure the observers and the readers to a colourful world that is full of energy.  “Open-Air-Galerie” is an admirable collection of photographs that depict works of art made on walls, doors, windows and on any outside surface available. Anonymous and well known artists transform the bare and soulless surface to an astounding depiction of emotions and situations.

Speech by Christian Ude, Mayor of Munich and by Theodoros Bechrakis, Mayor of Athens

Workshop “Greek Team 2006” by Guy Feaux de la Croix and artists from the School of Fine Arts in  A
thens and Warsaw

6-20 May
Atelier
Kallithea Pentelis

In a global society based on rationality football remains one of the last great myths. Much like the anthropomorphic art of the ancient Greeks sought to create physical embodiments of the myths, of their anxieties and their aspirations. The Greek Team 2006 will seek to explore the football myths by means of sculpture to give it an artistic expression.

The challenge of this project is no less but to elucidate human identity. The light it will cast on the physical and emotional differentiation between men and women should, however, be understood as a pars pro to reflection on human identity in general.

Bringing to light archaic identities is an important step in considering if and how we may overcome archaic predetermination in a new social context and by our own free will, in considering if and how women may fully partake in the football sport as fans and players.

Art Exhibition by Maria Kelaidi
Gallery ANEMOS  (12 Agiou Trifonos Street, Kifissia)

 9 May – 10 June
Opening Hours:    Tue. Thu. Fri:  10.00-14.00 & 17.30-20.30   Wed.: 10.00-14.00   Sat.: 10.00-15.00

Maria Kelaidis takes the viewer by the hand and ushers him on his own personal journey. These wanderings are trips into memory, the imprints of memories, journeys of musical colours, as filtered by time. Her works contains references to the boundless expanses of the east and to myths created from everyday life as rooted in the past. The elements of traditions from areas of the near-east are presented unobtrusively and through an abundance of colour whisper of the origin, physical and /or spiritual of the creator.

Excerpts from small stories through large surfaces show the presence of faces, objects, situations, the memory distilled. Small stories stemming from a base of abstract natural landscapes, as the landscapes, as the landscape of memory. The multiple layers of the paintings are achieved by the use of warm and cold colours, the game of perspective and the gentle setting of boundaries of the subjects of the narrative landscape, achieved through the presence of colour rather than drawing.

The artist wishes to share the Variety, the Greatness, the Harmony and the Power: Greatness minimizes and sets every day life in the proper frame, Harmony gives away tranquility, Power urges respect towards the Nature and Variety changes the mood and the images.

Art Exhibition “Art in Recycling” – Artistic High School of Gerakas                                             Cultural Centre “Melina” of the Municipality of Athens (66 Heraklidon St. Thissio)

26 May – 5 June
Opening Hours:         9.00-13.00 & 17.00-21.00 except Mondays and Sunday afternoon

The intense creativity and imagination of the students of the artistic High School of Gerakas is the reason for this exhibition.  It is a mixture of art and recycling and it gave students the opportunity to explore the possibilities and the procedures of reusing metals, plastics, glass and paper. They also learned the various ways of using them through the creation of artistic objects and thus getting in touch with the art of Mosaic, Engraving, Sculpturing, Book, Theatrical Plays and Puppets.

These suggestions which are presented at “Melina” Cultural Centre reflect the result of this attempt and originate from the interaction among nature, everyday life and art and at the same time they give a new dimension to these already used objects.

Recycling has been an exceptional frame for the dynamic absorbance of litter from nature and for the inseparable relationship between the consumer goods packaging and art.
